Summary:
Pulse oxymetry is a widely used technique for the non-invasive monitoring of arterial blood hemoglobin oxygen saturation and heart rate. In this paper we present an innovative method of digital elaboration
of the photopletismographic signal obtaining by monitoring the absorption of laser light at different waveforms.
The advantages of the proposed method, based on a digital linear filtering followed by a non-linear
histogram-based processing, are a good noise immunity with respect to electrical interferences and movement artifacts together with a low computational requirements.
Dynamic and statical oxygen rate measurements in human volunteers were performed, both with healtly subjects performing deep apnoeas and with patients with respiratory failure conditions.
Keywords: Pulse oximeter, data elaboration, noise.
